Topic: Santa Claus

I thought L. Frank Baum's book about Santa Claus was pretty good.
It fit into his fairy world more than I was comfortable with, but
then I realized that the folklore about Santa hadn't even been written
when Baum wrote his book.  Just the 'night before christmas' and the
Nash cartoons, I think existed in the late 1890's.  Does anyone know
much about the history of when he was called Kris Kringle etc?

Re: Santa Claus

I think Miracle on 34th street was the first appearance of Kris Kringle. I could be wrong.

And of course, there is the fact that Mary Christmas is his wife's maiden name.

Re: Santa Claus

I grew up with The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus and it's become my personal Santa Claus story for that reason. Our family's stocking rituals and Santa Claus was much like the one at the end of the book with the parents being Santa's deputys. It wasn't until years later that I learned the St. Nicholas legends. Has anyone here seen the Claymation version of the Baum Santa Claus on TV?  I taped it one year. Not a bad rendition of the book. I think it was on Hallmark or ABC Family channel?

Re: Santa Claus

Yes, I have the Rankin-Bass stop-motion version on tape.  There's apparently also an adaptation of the story that uses traditional hand-drawn animation, but I've never seen it.

From what I've heard, "Kris Kringle" is the German name for the Christ Child who brings gifts on Christmas.  He's a distinct figure from St. Nicholas, but Americans kind of mixed the two together.

Re: Santa Claus

Well, there's no hint of it in the book, but in the Rankin-Bass adaptation, Ak and Claus do briefly visit Japan.
